Matt Prince

Matt Prince (b. Hobart, 1983) is a furniture designer based in Tasmania. He is a graduate of the Australian School of Fine Furniture as well as the School of Architecture and Design, University of Tasmania, where he currently lectures.

His practice is concerned with designing furniture solutions that respond to the needs and desires of the end user. Matt’s work is constantly informed by the making process itself, and his experiences of being an educator continuously reaffirm his design process. Matt’s work is holistically elegant, expressive in its materials and honest in its making. He believes that a piece of furniture should not be considered a stand-alone piece but rather a component used to complete an environment.

Since launching Matt Prince Design in 2011 at Sawtooth ARI Gallery, Matt has exhibited nationally as well as participating in exciting collaborations. In late 2011 Matt became the first external designer to feature under the brand Derlot Editions, launched at Saturday In Design, Melbourne, 2012. Matt was also selected as the Tasmanian designer for a national cohort of furniture designers that make up the One Third brand (2012). In 2013 Matt was selected for the exhibition and mentorship program Flat, Stack, Fold organized by Design Tasmania and touring nationally during 2014. Matt was shortlisted for Australia’s Emerging Designer of the Year Award by Temple and Webster and Inside Out (2012), and the Idea Awards (Object, Furniture and Lighting), 2013. His work has been featured in national and international design publications including Monument, Wallpaper and Inside Magazines.
